The section of engineering education, including four chairs being part of the CETE-Network, shows special expertise: the chair for educational research is concerned with early educational processes (from kindergarten until grade 7) - with specials regards to early engineering education, primary school and its transitions, the engineering socialisation in families as well as to gender studies in this field. This chair is held by CETE’s project manager Prof. Dr. Ingelore Mammes.

The chairs of engineering and its didactics with the expertise of Prof. Dr. Stefan Fletcher and Prof. Dr. Martin Lang cover the field of engineering education, especially in primary and secondary schools, but also partly in vocational training.

The chair of vocational education and business education, held by Prof. Dr. Dieter Münk, covers not only the field of vocational education, but is also concerned with the field of engineering pedagogics as well as with the overall industrial-technical vocational education in the framework of secondary schools (vocational training) and the field of vocational training and professional development.

School Research K-7

Prof. Dr. Mammes

Currently Prof. Dr. Ingelore Mammes holds the chair for educational research with particular consideration of early educational processes at the faculty of educational sciences at University Duisburg-Essen.

From 2009 until 2011 she held a professorship for classroom research at the University of Paderborn and took over the scientific direction of the student lab (coolMINT). In her postdoctoral thesis, composed at the University of Bamberg from 2002 until 2007, she dealt with thinking patterns of teaching staff as a challenge for the development of lessons the subjects of nature and engineering.

From 2001 until 2002 Prof. Dr. Mammes was a visiting professor for technical elementary education at the University of Kassel. In her doctorate between 1997 and 2001 at the University of Münster she examined the interest of girls and boys in engineering with special regard to gender.

Prof. Dr. Mammes is responsible for several projects dealing with engineering education (for instance “on the meaning of engineering education for self-education”; “the conception of a subject on nature and engineering”; “Kids’ Engineering Day” (KIngs Day); “ParentChild-University”).

She is an advisory board member of the research institution “INSPIRE” (Institute for P-12 Engineering Research and Learning) at Purdue University. As chairwoman she is leading the committee “Engineering at primary schools” at The Association of German Engineers (VDI). Prof. Dr. Mammes also is an advisory board member of “Engineering and Society”, the German Association for Engineering Education (DGTB), the Association for Didactics of Science Classes (GDSU), the Association for Didactics of Chemistry and Physics (GDCP), the German Association for Educational Sciences (DGfE) as well as of the work group for Empiric Educational Research (AEPF). She is an editorial board member of the magazines “Pre-College Engineering Education Research” (J-PEER) and “International Journal for Technology and Design Education”.

Prof. Dr. phil. Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Fletcher

Institute of Technology and Didactics of Technology

Prof. Dr. Fletcher

Prof. Dr. Stefan Fletcher has been holding the chair for Engineering and its Didactics with the collaboration of Prof. Dr. Martin Lang at University of Duisburg Essen’s faculty for Engineering Sciences since 2008.

On completion of his studies of mechanical engineering Prof. Dr. Fletcher started a study programme for teaching profession at vocational training schools and graduated in 1997 with the First State Examination. After completing his traineeship and the Second State Examination he worked as a research associate and later as a research assistant in Duisburg, Karlsruhe and Magdeburg in manifold fields of industrial-technical teacher training. Subsequent to his doctorate in 2003 at the University of Magdeburg, he accepted a professorship for technical communications and didactics of technical disciplines at the Technical and Business University of Aalen in 2004. Here he created the new study programme “Engineering Pedagogics” and later on lead it as academic dean.

At his current location in Essen, Prof. Dr. Fletcher set up a video lab for classroom research and does research in the field of teaching methodology for engineering on learning processes as well as in the field of computerised teaching and learning media. He is a member of the executive board for the Centre of Empirical Research in Education (ZeB) and for the Centre of Teacher Training (ZLB) at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Further, he is a member of the scientific advisory board for the Journal of Technical Education (JOTED).
