Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)
The Technical University of Delft (TU Delft) is one of the most renowned universities of the Netherlands and is well known for engineering sciences. It does not only have national importance but has proven its identity internationally through cooperations with other educational institutions and research establishments. The TU Delft obtained the 86th rank in the QS World University Ranking (2014), its faculty for Engineering and Technology hereby obtained the 16th rank.
The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of the Technical University of Delft. It especially distinguishes itself through the section of Science Education and Communication (SEC) in which teacher training and research of natural-scientific and technical-scientific education complement each other. Hereby early educational processes are taken into account as well as educational processes in the later educational trajectory.
The TU Delft is part of the Dutch “3TU Educational and Research Programme”. The programme has the aim to promote engineering education not only as a part of vocational education but also as general education through the unification of the three Technical Universities’ expertise of the Netherlands. Part of the strategy hereby is international networking.
The Faculty of Applied Sciences is part of the CETE-Network, introducing Prof. Dr. Marc de Vries, and enriches the network with great expertise in the field of natural sciences and technology.
Prof. Dr. Marc J. de Vries
Faculty of Applied Sciences
Prof. Dr. Marc J. de Vries is a full professor of Science and Technology Education at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, as well as affiliate professor of Philosophy of Technology at the same institute. He is also an affiliate professor of Technology and Engineering Education at the Royal institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm. He studied experimental physics at the Free University Amsterdam with a specialization in physics education. His Ph.D. was from Eindhoven University of Technology with a dissertation on Technology in Physics education. Part of the dissertation is about measuring pupils’ concept of and attitude towards technology. He was director of the Technology teacher education program at the Pedagogical Technical College (PTH) in Eindhoven and now he is responsible for the Delft teacher education program for physics, chemistry, mathematics and information sciences.
He is also the scientific director of the research program supporting this teacher education program. He is the co-author of a series of Dutch textbooks for the subject Technology in Dutch secondary education, as well as member of the advisory board for several series of television programs on science and technology for the Dutch Education Television (NOT) company. He was co-founder of the Dutch Association of Technology Teachers and currently a member-of-honor of that association. He was also awarded the membership of the Academy of Fellows in the International Technology and Engineering Education Association (ITEEA) in the USA.
Currently he serves as the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Technology & Design Education (Springer), series editor of the International Technology education Studies book series (Sense Publishers) and chairman of the PATT-Foundation that is responsible for the international Pupils’ Attitudes Towards Technology conferences, of which the 29th will be held in Marseille, France, 2015. He is also member of the editorial board for four other academic journals (three on education and one on philosophy). He was involved a couple of times as reviewer of project proposals in the EU Framework Programmes (for projects on science education and technology assessment).
